Mifflinburg

Mifflinburg StreetSettled in the late 1700's by German immigrants, the historic town of Mifflinburg is nestled in a valley with some of the richest farmland in Pennsylvania. The town grew in both size and wealth at the turn of the century when it became known as “Buggy Town”- and with good reason. Mifflinburg had 75 buggy makers and was exporting 5,000 buggies annually to almost all of the United States. It was prestigious back then to be driving a “Mifflinburg Buggy –beautifully crafted in the German tradition”. It was at this time that the architecturally wonderful, downtown buildings and homes in the historic area were built –many “painted brick with ornate gingerbread trim”. Enjoy the carefully preserved architecture as you stroll the streets and browse the charming shops in downtown.

You can return to Mifflinburg's buggy era, by visiting the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, which is the only original, historic buggy factory in the country. The museum is located at the corner of Green and 6th Streets.

WelcomeWhile in Mifflinburg enjoy the town's charming specialty shops. Some of Mifflinburg's downtown shops attract customers from all over the country.  There are many other shopping delights along the main street from lovely  gift shops to butcher shops. Nearby there is more shopping fun to discover: Country Farm and Home (a garden and gift center) many unique, wonderful specialty stores.  All this shopping is sure to make you hungry and Mifflinburg has lots of restaurant choices; from pizza or a sub sandwich to a quiet dinner or lunch at Scarlet D Tavern or Carriage Corner Restaurant, amid historic Mifflinburg Buggies. For a change of pace, you can take Mifflinburg's Self Guided Walking Tour through the Historic Area (call 570-966-1666 or 570-966-3873 for maps).

Hiking and outdoor activities are popular with Mifflinburgers and visitors alike. Buffalo Creek and the Koons Hiking Trail meander along the north edge of town. At one point, the creek is crossed by the Hassenplug Covered Bridge (you can travel over this covered bridge on north 3rd Street). Just a few miles south of town is Penns Creek, one of the premiere fishing streams in Pennsylvania. The mountains to the west, north, and south are a hunter’s paradise for turkey, whitetail deer and black bear.  Surrounding Mifflinburg is rich farmland. Many farms are Mennonite owned, so it is not unusual to find yourself sharing the road with horses and buggies. In the summer months, you will find many roadside vegetable stands with fresh picked farm produce for sale.
