Sunbury

Sunbury The historic city of Sunbury is a great place to live, work and play.  Sunbury is located on the confluence of the beautiful Susquehanna River. The city was incorporated in 1772 and covers 2.33 square miles.  Sunbury is the county seat for Northumberland County. The current city council firmly believes in family values and bases many of its decisions on these values.

If you are looking for recreation opportunities, Sunbury is the place for you.  There are numerous baseball and softball fields, with opportunities for both males and females of all ages.  The community boasts a swimming pool and the only indoor ice rink in a 50 mile area.  The rink is used by area hockey leagues from October to March and is Bucknell University’s home ice.

Sunbury is home to the world’s largest fabridam which, when inflated, creates Lake Augusta.  The Susquehanna River is also a fisherman’s delight for shad and walleye and is home to area rowing clubs. Sunbury was the first municipality in this area to create a skate/bicycle park and is in the process of planning a walking trail at our North Fourth Street Recreation Plaza.

The community is served by an excellent volunteer fire department and a proactive police department. Sunbury is also home to the Degenstein Public Library and the Shikellamy School District.Sunbury is rich in history.  Fort Augusta was built in 1756 along Front Street. In July of 1833, the City Hotel (now the Hotel Edison) was the first building ever to be wired for electricity.  Thomas Edison wired the hotel using his three wire system.  The same day he wired the Railroad Station on Second Street.  In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Sunbury was a major railroad center.
