Leadership Susquehanna Valley
Culture and Entertainment

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy both the beauty and the abundant recreational opportunities of the Greater Susquehanna Valley. The Valley is home to many state parks and forests, providing ample opportunities for hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, boating, water skiing, and mountain biking. Winter sports opportunities also abound. Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice-skating, downhill skiing in the nearby Pocono Mountains, and other winter recreational activities are all possible in the Valley. With its rural, country landscape, the area serves as a favorite getaway for weekend travelers, who come to enjoy our many quaint bed & breakfasts, small-town atmosphere, and picturesque scenery. Sports fans will enjoy watching the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, the Williamsport Cross Cutters at historic Bowman Field or the Penn State Nittany Lions in nearby State College. The Valley also hosts the Little League World Series each fall. In addition, more than a dozen challenging golf courses dot the region.

The region also offers a wide variety of opportunities for shopping and dining including malls, and attractive downtown shopping districts. In addition, the area hosts a wide variety of cultural, theatrical, and arts events.

Baseball

Little League World Series
Each year, baseball teams from all over the world converge on the Valley for the Little League World Series. This exciting, weeklong event takes place in Williamsport, just North of the Greater Susquehanna Valley.

Williamsport Crosscutters
The Williamsport Crosscutters are a single A, short-season baseball team that competes in the New York Penn League. Drawing fans of all ages, the Crosscutters play in historic Bowman Field, which was built in 1926.

Many spectacular opportunities for hunting and trapping exist in the Greater Susquehanna Valley. Nearly a dozen state game lands are located here, offering prime locations for hunting deer, fowl and bear. Offering maps, lists of stocked local trout streams, and information about boating and fishing licenses, the Fish & Boat Commission’s website provides valuable information for outdoor enthusiasts in the Greater Susquehanna Valley. In addition, the Commission’s website offers maps, and information about the three state water trails that pass through the Valley. These trails are perfect for canoe and kayak trips.

Museums and Art Galleries

Children’s Discovery Workshop
The Children’s Discovery Workshop is a hands-on, children’s museum designed to provide valuable learning experiences, and lots of fun for children. Exhibits include a two-story castle, a 129 ft. cave, an ant wall, and a shadow room.

Joseph Priestly House Museum
This museum, operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, preserves the home of Joseph Priestly, an early American scientist and theologian. Priestly is credited with having discovered oxygen and developing methods for carbonating water. Built in 1794, the Priestly House Museum houses what may be the first scientific research laboratory in the United States.

Lore Degenstein Gallery

Mifflinburg Buggy Museum
Occupying the only known preserved 19th century carriage shop in the United States, the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum offers visitors a unique look at transportation in the United States before the invention of the automobile.

Packwood House Museum
The Packwood House Museum, situated in a former tavern and hotel that was built sometime between 1796 and 1799, displays fine art and antiques from around the world. Eighteen exhibit-filled rooms and a garden are open daily. The museum contains exhibits of Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Oriental art, glass, ceramics, textiles, furniture, and paintings.

Slifer House Museum
Located in Lewisburg, the Slifer House Museum offers exhibits reflecting life in the Greater Susquehanna Valley during the Victorian era. The museum also hosts a variety of special events, including a summer concert series, fashion shows, Victorian teas, and murder mysteries.

Theater

Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble
Founded in 1978, the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is a professional theater troupe that has staged over 150 plays, including works by Shaw, Beckett, Miller, Molière, Euripides, and Shakespeare. Performances are held in the Alvina Krause Theatre, a restored movie theater in downtown Bloomsburg.

Community Arts Center
Located in downtown Williamsport, the Community Arts Center occupies the carefully restored Capitol Theatre building, built in 1928 at the height of the vaudeville era, in downtown Williamsport. Over the years, the Community Arts Center has hosted hundreds of world-famous performers, including the New York Pops, Aretha Franklin, George Thorogood, Yo-Yo Ma, B.B. King, Jethro Tull, and George Carlin. The Community Arts Center also houses a movie theater, showing a wide variety of independent and foreign films.
