Chamber Responds to Governor’s Broadband Initiative

“Our location, right at the crosshairs of what Governor Wolf described as ‘un-served,’ places us among the biggest cheerleaders for this initiative,” this is how Bob Garrett reacted to the Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s broadband announcement of earlier today.  Garrett explained that the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce adopted the expansion of broadband and high-speed internet as their top priority a little over three years ago.  He said, “We heard loud and clear from our members, particularly small businesses, that slow internet and in some cases, no internet, was the biggest threat to their businesses.”

“Since then, we’ve mobilized and are working hard to bring these services to all of the Greater Susquehanna Valley, Garrett stated.  He wrapped up by pointing out, “It was a Pennsylvania governor who got the ‘farmer out of the mud’ early in the 20th century with his Pinchot Roads, and maybe it will Governor Wolf who ‘leads the farmer into the future’ with this broadband initiative?”

While applauding the governor’s initiative, Garrett did offer a clarification related to rural broadband and high-speed internet.  Some will suggest that we have no broadband in our valley.  In reality we have phenomenal service being provided by firms such as Service Electric and PenTeleData.  What we have are connectivity and affordability issues and it’s with those issues that we are seeking out public sector partners.  “By working together with these private firms along with public entities, our students, families and businesses in rural areas—in fact, everywhere—will thrive and remain competitive in our ever-evolving information age,” Garrett concluded.
