Leading our Valley Young Americans

On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted a seminar for our 2016-2017 Young Americans at the Country Cupboard in Lewisburg.  The only program of its kind in the Susquehanna Valley, the Young Americans Program recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of nearly 90 students in twelve participating schools throughout the Greater Susquehanna Valley for their achievements in academics and extra-curricular activities.  Each year the Chamber brings the students together for an all-day seminar that is led by area business leaders and focuses on topics such as networking, diversity, finance, leadership and communication.

The day started with a powerful presentation by Mr. Harvey Edwards, adjunct English Instructor and Teacher-In-Residence at Susquehanna University.  Speaking on the topic of diversity, Mr. Edwards engaged the students on what diversity really means and how to embrace the differences in the world instead of showing indifference toward one another.  The second presenter was Caz Russell, a John Maxwell Certified Coach, Teacher, Trainer and Speaker, who utilized his Labrador retriever, Chilli, as a visual demonstration of how kindness, respect, selflessness, trust and commitment helps all of us to apply his leadership lessons to our own lives. Coleen Snover, Assistant Vice President of Training and Development for Service 1st Federal Credit Union, spoke to the students about finance and led a financial simulation on what it is like to budget on various incomes.  The final presenter of the day, Mr. Ken Altenbach from Team Building US, got the students moving by using verbal and non-verbal communication to stress the importance of working together as a team to accomplish your goals.

We would like to thank the following partners and business leaders that helped make the day a huge success for our Young Americans. Seminar Parnter: Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit; Lunch Partner: Service 1st Federal Credit Union.
