The 2nd Annual Members Choice Anthracite Economic Summit

Last year, the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce had just completed its assimilation with the former Brush Valley Regional Chamber and launched, along with the Members Choice Financial Credit Union the inaugural Anthracite Economic Summit.  Last year’s event was held at the Anthracite Outdoor Activity Area (AOAA) with U.S. Congressman Lou Barletta (R-Hazelton) as the keynote speaker.

Since then the Chamber membership in the eastern end of Northumberland County has grown, by leaps and bounds, and this business advocacy is attracting a lot of attention for its broadband and high-speed internet advocacy as well as its workforce development initiatives.  This year the Chamber has aligned with the News-Item along with its inaugural sponsor Members Choice, in hosting this high-impact summit.

The 2nd Annual Members Choice Anthracite Economic Summit will be held at the Northumberland Career and Technology Center, located at 1700 W. Montgomery Street, Coal Township, PA 17866 beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 22nd.

The summit’s keynoter is a top U.S. Department of Energy official.  Doug Matheney, Special Assistant to the Secretary on Fossil Fuels will kick-off the day’s discussions.  His address will be followed by a panel of experts who will address coal and carbon issues, while also fielding questions related to natural gas and renewable energy sources.  From high atop the hill where the Vo-Tech sits, you can see the turning rotors of wind turbines near Centralia, literally watch the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline being laid, all while standing on one of our nation’s largest anthracite coal fields.  Simply stated, there’s no better platform on which to discuss America’s energy future and how our valley may fit into this future.

After a lunch prepared by Chef Jim Schiavoni (Culinary instructor) and his award-winning students, the summit participants will break-out into three smaller groups to focus on issues related to the Anthracite Outdoor Activity Area (AOAA), Coal Region Hospitality and Workforce/CareerBASICs.  These groups will help to “lay the tracks” that will guide our efforts toward the prosperity of our entire area.

Portions of the summit are intended for the participants only; however, members of the media are warmly invited to attend the morning sessions for the keynote address and the panel discussion.
